J. Michael Walker's exquisitely detailed, large-scale paintings and three-dimensional constructions converse with a dozen historic artifacts from the collections of the Autry's Museum of the American West and Southwest Museum of the American Indian.
Together, they give voice to the hidden stories of Los Angeles, examining connections between our history, heritage, and present-day realities on the city's saintly named streets.

Tangible history and unanticipated associations are repeatedly revealed, through painting, video, story, and song, in "All the Saints of the City of the Angels," at the Museum of the American West, at the Autry National Center.

Since 2000, J. Michael Walker has been researching every Los Angeles street named for saints, delving into city records, hagiographies, old photographs, maps, and history books. This exhibition combines meticulous research with creative inspiration to depict both historical and contemporary stories of conflict and community, spirituality and poverty, homelessness and violence, urban development and sacred space, hopelessness and hopefulness, and more.
